The impact of working memory on learning

Understanding dyslexia and literacy difficulties

  • Understand different definitions of dyslexia

  • Learn about the ‘dyslexia debate’

  • Recognise areas of difficulty

  • Learn about assessments of dyslexia

  • Learn how to undertake a ‘miscue analysis’ of reading and ‘spelling error analysis’

  • Learn about a range of intervention approaches

  • Recognise how to ensure an intervention programme is effective

Half day training course.  

Precision Teaching intervention

  • Understand stages of learning and principles of PT

  • Design a PT programme for a child being worked with

  • Be able to undertake baseline assessments

  • Recognise and learn how to overcome common pitfalls in implementing PT

  • Learn how to track progress and achieve maximum results

Half day followed by 3 twilight sessions.  PT programmes to be undertaken between sessions.  Twilight sessions will be used to track progress and troubleshoot any difficulties.  Alternatively, refresher twilight sessions can be run for those who have undertaken PT training previously.

Attention and concentration

  • Learn the role of attention in learning

  • Know how to spot signs of attention difficulties

  • Understand strategies that can support the learning of children with attention difficulties

Half day training course.  

Making best use of  teaching assistant support

  • To recognise barriers to TA practice, identified within research

  • To support pupil readiness for learning by tackling ‘learned helplessness’ and developing ‘growth mindset’

  • To understand the ‘learning hierarchy’ and ‘zone of proximal development’

  • To practice developing success criteria and to be able to use a scaffolding framework (and the interventions that can be taken at each stage)

Half day training course.  This course can be adapted for a shorter session if required.

Paired reading

  • To understand and be able to implement a paired reading intervention in school

  • To be able to share paired reading interventions with parents to use at home

Twilight session

Differentiation for children with significant learning difficulties

  • Recognise stages of learning

  • Learn a range of methods by which tasks can be differentiated

  • Identify where to find resources for differentiation

  • Practise differentiating your planning

Half day training course.  

Mediated learning

  • To understand ‘zone of proximal development’

  • To identify learning skills which children need to be effective learners

  • To understand mediation

  • To use mediation strategies to develop learning skills

Half day training course.  This course can be adapted for a shorter session if required.

Introduction to dynamic assessment

  • Understand the difference between standardised and dynamic assessments

  • Recognise the purpose of dynamic assessment

  • Identify ways in which learning can be mediated

  • Observe and analyse dynamic assessment sessions using video clips

  • Practise using dynamic assessments
