Circles of Friends (an intervention to support children with friendship difficulties)

  • Understand principles underpinning CoF intervention

  • Be able to identify children who may benefit from CoF intervention

  • Learn how to implement a CoF intervention

Half day training course.  

ELSA

  • Learn how to design and undertake therapeutic interventions (covering areas such as emotional regulation, social & friendship skills, self-esteem, loss & bereavement)

6 days initial training followed by half termly 2 hour supervision in small groups.

Counselling skills for ELSAs

  • To develop basic counseling skills to help children reflect on their concerns

1 full day followed by 2 half day workshops

Designated Mentor for Looked After Children

  • To understand the needs of Looked After Children and how they can find it difficult to engage with learning

  • To introduce a mentoring model

  • To use therapeutic approaches (including solution focused techniques, restorative strategies, motivational interviewing processes)

  • To use a range of therapeutic resources (including puppets, miniatures, stones, life maps, feelings graphs) to enrich conversations and explore children’s views

Introducing Restorative Justice approaches

  • Identifying four interaction styles when working with children

  • Identifying what pupils need whether they have been harmed or done harm

  • Recognising limitations of sanctions

  • Using 5 key questions to extend children’s understanding

Introducing Motivational Interviewing techniques to support change in behaviour

  • Use active listening skills and different questioning techniques

  • Recognise and assess stages of change

  • Identify support approaches at each stage

CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) techniques to support emotional development

  • Learn how to support children to reflect on links between thoughts, feelings and behaviour

  • Understand how to use CBT approaches when delivering interventions with children

Introducing SFBT (solution focused brief therapy) techniques to support emotional development and change in behaviour

  • Use solution focused framework for conversations

  • Recognise how problems can be tackled without having to even talk about the problem!

  • Use scaling within conversations

  • Be able to use a range of practical approaches to engage children in solution focused conversations

Looked After Children

  • Understand the key needs and difficulties of Looked After Children / Children in Care

  • Recognise the range of local authority support available for these children

  • Be able to use key recommended approaches

Half day.

Raising awareness of self-harm

  • Understanding why some children self-harm

  • Recognising the impact of self-harm in school

  • Identifying helpful things to communicate and what to avoid

  • Identifying what information to record and track

  • Establishing designated member of staff and their role

Twilight session.

Supporting children with ADHD

  • Recognising what ADHD is (and is not)

  • Identifying three areas of ADHD

  • Identify strategies and school systems that support children with ADHD

  • Developing a toolkit

  • Being able to write an effective behaviour plan

  • To develop a personal support plan to raise awareness of ADHD within your setting

Full day training course.  This course can be adapted for a shorter session if required.

Autism

  • Understand the nature of autism spectrum disorders and the impact of these upon children’s behaviour

  • Recognise some key theories

  • Be able to implement key strategies for meeting the needs of children with autism

Loss and bereavement

  • Recognise the extent of loss and bereavement in children’s lives

  • Learn about the grieving process

  • Understand the developmental nature of children’s responses to death

  • Increase confidence in supporting bereaved children

Using Comic Strip Conversations to extend children’s social understanding

  • Understand the purpose and rationale of comic strip conversations 

  • Recognise and utilise the features of comic strip conversations

  • Develop confidence and practise creating and using comic strip conversationsdren
